Hospitality is not optional
Tea will be offered and refusing outright causes genuine offence. Accept, hold the cup in your right hand, and expect a second and third pour. If you are invited to a meal, arrive hungry.

Afghanistan's calendar blends Islamic observances, Persian heritage, and nomadic traditions. Nowruz (March 21) is the biggest celebration — especially at the Blue Mosque in Mazar-i-Sharif. Buzkashi season runs October through spring in northern provinces. Ashura brings powerful processions in Kabul's Hazara neighborhoods.

Portraits are usually welcomed if you ask first, and often refused if you do not. Never photograph police, military vehicles or checkpoints. Women should generally not be photographed without a clear yes.
Long trousers and covered shoulders for everyone; women should carry a headscarf, and wear it in shrines, smaller towns and the south. It is a mark of respect rather than a restriction.
Food is served communally from a single dish. Eat with your right hand, take from the section nearest you, and stop when your host stops. Bread is broken, not cut, and never placed face down.
Card acceptance is limited outside a handful of Kabul and Mazar businesses. Bring clean, unmarked US dollars or Afghanis in small denominations, and expect change to be scarce.
Salam — hello. Tashakor — thank you. Bale / Na — yes / no. Khub — good. Attempting Dari or Pashto is almost always rewarded with warmth.

TourChain is a national tourism platform developed by OEAC Network and dedicated to the Ministry of Information and Culture of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. It exists to give every traveller a trustworthy way to reach this country — and every guide, hotelier, driver and restaurateur a fair, verified place to be found.
OEAC Network is an Afghan development organisation founded in 2020, during one of the most difficult periods in the country's recent history. It began with five volunteers in a small office in Kabul's Karte Parwan district, teaching digital literacy to students who had lost access to their classrooms.
That work grew into eight digital platforms serving education, health, business and media across twelve provinces — from a digital library and an online academy to a blood-donation network that has connected donors with hospitals nationwide. TourChain is the ninth, and the first built specifically for the country's tourism sector.
The organisation is led by its founder, Abdul Nasir Ahmadi, who has represented it at the United Nations Youth Assembly, the World Economic Forum Global Shaper Summit and as a TEDx speaker on digital empowerment.
Every day, we work towards a future where every Afghan citizen has access to quality education, economic opportunities, and the digital tools they need to succeed.
Abdul Nasir Ahmadi — Founder & Executive DirectorTo empower every Afghan citizen with digital tools, quality education and economic opportunity — and, through TourChain, to open the country's heritage to the world in a way that benefits the communities who live among it.
A digitally empowered, educated and economically stable Afghanistan — where a visitor's first impression of the country is the one Afghans chose to show them, and where tourism income reaches the families who make it possible.
Afghanistan holds five UNESCO-listed and tentative sites, the finest surviving Timurid and Ghurid architecture in the region, and landscapes that are genuinely without equal. The country deserves a platform worthy of that inheritance — and the people who guide visitors through it deserve to be fairly paid for the work.

TourChain is placed at the service of the Ministry of Information and Culture, which carries the mandate for the protection of Afghanistan's heritage and the promotion of its culture at home and abroad. The platform is designed to work with the Ministry rather than around it: every guide and every business listed here is presented as licensed, every heritage site is described with its cultural context, and the verification tools exist so that a visitor can confirm a licence against the register before they commit money to a trip.
Nothing on this platform is sold against the national interest. Tourism income that reaches licensed Afghan operators is income that stays in the country, sustains families in provinces with few other opportunities, and creates a practical reason to protect the monuments, the valleys and the craft traditions that make Afghanistan what it is.
TourChain joins a family of platforms built for Afghanistan. All of them are free to use and all of them are maintained from Kabul.
